Roadmaps in Timebook

A Roadmap provides a strategic overview of all the planned work in your organization. It serves as the primary guide for your entire Timebook Workplace, steering teams through projects and ensuring alignment. Roadmaps help you easily identify key milestones and significant tasks while your organization stays focused on its overarching goals.

One type of Roadmap available is the Feature Roadmap, which is excellent for planning and prioritizing. It lets you view all scheduled Features and focus on what is urgent or important using the now/next/later approach.

Timebook also has Project Roadmaps which help you compare timelines of Projects in various Teams. This makes it easy to see how different Teams' Projects line up and stay coordinated. We explain both Feature and Product Roadmaps in detail below.

There are also Strategy Roadmaps, which are powerful tools that allow you to visualize and align your organization’s strategic goals over a timeline. They provide a clear, high-level overview of your objectives, showing how they connect with each other over time and how they contribute to the overall vision of your organization.

This article explains the Timebook's concept of a Roadmap and its basic features.

But we have a separate article that explains how to create and manage Roadmaps at the Workplace level. For more information, see Roadmaps (in Workplace)

Feature Roadmap

This type of Roadmap uses the now/next/later approach to display your planned work. All Features are spread across three columns that show the current and upcoming periods:

  • [Now] This column shows high-priority and usually short-term work that might need immediate attention.

  • [Next] This column shows medium-priority work planned for the near future.

  • [Later] This column shows work intended for future attention but not urgent or immediate.

Feature Roadmaps automatically show all Work Items from your entire Timebook Workplace as long as their type is set to "Feature" and they have a defined start and/or due date.

To ensure that a Feature is visible in your Roadmaps, just remember to set the start and due dates.

You have full control over your Roadmap as you can open and edit all Features inside it. You can't drag and drop Features between columns, but you can edit their start and due dates. Your Roadmap will then automatically move these Features to appropriate columns.

In the top-right corner, you have two additional options to keep your Roadmap accessible:

  • [Add to Bookmarks] saves the Roadmap for future reference. You can find all bookmarked Roadmaps by opening the [Bookmarks] module in the Navigator.

  • [Pin to Navigator] adds the Roadmap to the [Pinned items] area of the Navigator. You can quickly jump to the pinned Roadmap using the menu on the left, regardless of where you are in Timebook.

Each Feature Roadmap has an expandable drawer you can use to modify the Roadmap's properties.

Open the drawer using the dedicated button in the top-right corner to change the name of your Roadmap or add a description to clarify the Roadmap's purpose.

You can also assign an [Owner] to your Roadmap or change the period for the now/next/later columns to see your plan divided into weeks, months, or quarters.

Project Roadmap

This type of Roadmap allows you to view all selected Projects from across your Workplace side by side. Project Roadmaps are most useful for viewing your organization's work in a bigger picture. You can also manage the details by expanding each Project to see all the objects inside it. Additionally, you can drag and drop objects between Projects to move tasks around easily.

Each Project Roadmap has a scope switch at the top that allows you to change the period for the Roadmap's timeline. Use the switch to see your Projects from the [Day], [Week], [Month], or [Quarter] perspective.

By default, we show Project Roadmaps in the [Timeline] layout to help you see the sequence or duration of Projects and how they overlap.

But you can change the layout, apply grouping and sorting, and filter the data in your Project Roadmaps. You can also save such modified views for later use.

We have dedicated articles that explain changing and saving views. For more information, see Layouts & views

  • [Pin to Navigator] adds the Roadmap to the [Pinned items] area of the Navigator. You can quickly jump to the pinned Roadmap using the menu on the left, regardless of where you are in Timebook.

Additionally, each Product Roadmap has an expandable drawer you can use to modify the Roadmap's properties. Open the drawer using the dedicated button in the top-right corner to change the name of your Roadmap or add a description to clarify the Roadmap's purpose.

You can also assign an [Owner] to the Roadmap, change its time frame, or adjust the visible data by selecting the desired Projects using the [Project] property.

Strategy Roadmap

This type of Roadmap focuses on your organization's Goals and displays them side by side on a timeline. Strategy Roadmaps help you visualize selected Goals and compare their start and end dates in one view. You can also open and edit any of the Goals displayed in a Strategy Roadmap.

Each Project Roadmap has a scope switch at the top that allows you to change the period for the Roadmap's timeline. Use the switch to see your Projects from the [Day], [Week], or [Month] perspective.

Each Strategy Roadmap will initially show only the Goals you selected during the creation of the Roadmap.
